Diegetic- Realistic sound that is meant to be heard in the shot with the source being visible.
Synchronous Sound- Sound which matches up with the images.
Sound Effects- Realistic sounds which match up with the images to create realism or to connote atmosphere.
Dialogue- Characters speaking
Ambient Sound- Natural background sound to create realism.
Non-Diegetic- Sound in which the source is not present on the screen.
Title Music- Theme tunes.
Score/ incidental music- Orchestral music used to connote tone or atmosphere.
Sound Motifs- Sounds associated with a certain character.
Sound Effects- Used to connote atmosphere.
Voice Over- Often used to give insight into characters and their thoughts.
Editing
Transition- Movement of one shot moves into another.
Continuity Editing- Making the editing smoother so it does not distract the audience from the narrative.
Axis Match- Angle of camera so it is the same from shot to shot.
Cross Cut/Parallel Cut- Alternates between two or more different scenes which happens at the same time.
Direction Match- Direction of person or object consistent across shots.
Dissolve- Gradual fading of one shot to another with momentary superimposition in-between.
Duration and Pacing- Length and rhythm of shots.
Long Take- Shot that continues for a long time. Could be tracking shot.
Eye-Line Match- Where characters appear to look at each other due to direction of glances.
Fade-in- Gradual lighting from black to the image.
Fade-out- Gradual darkening from the image to black.
Graphic Match- Juxtaposition of images that are graphically similar, such as same shape.
Iris-in- Image gradually appearing using an expanding circle.
Iris-out- The reverse of an Iris-in.
Movement-match- Action beginning in one shot and continuing or completing in next shot.
Wipe- An image being replaced with another usually vertically but can take other shapes.
Straight Cut- Two shots joining together with no clear continuity device.
Jump Cut- A break or cut that appears jerky.
CGI- Computer Generated Imagery.
Slow Motion/Fast Motion- Images being slowed down or sped up.
